Freebies from Your Smartphone

Freebie Fanatics Guest post: Freebies from Your Smartphone by Nisha Sharma.

A smartphone can give you access to dozens of freebies and savings opportunities. No matter what type of store from which you want to purchase, it is likely that smartphone-based savings or a freebie is available. Texting and downloading apps are how to get them.

QR Codes

The basis of many forms of savings is the QR (Quick Response) code. These are the small, black and white squares you have recently seen in catalogues, newspaper inserts, magazines and other locations. QR codes were originally created to track inventory. Now, they house videos, coupons, online catalogues, store addresses, maps and other information businesses want to share with their public.

You must first download an app for your smartphone that can read the QR codes. You can download the app to your computer and transfer it to your phone via USB cable or download it directly from your phone’s app store.

If you have an Android or iPhone, one QR code scanner app is the Quick-Mark QR reader. This app also creates barcodes so you can share contact or other information instantly with someone with a QR code-reading app. If you have a BlackBerry, the QR Code Scanner Pro is a popular QR code reader. You can use this code without needing your phone’s camera to operate. Some companies require you to download a particular QR code scanning app to take advantage of their savings and freebie offers.

Other Apps

Since not all coupons and freebies are based on QR codes, you must download other apps to get all the savings opportunities available. Coupon apps let you scan items in a store and pull up any available coupons or savings promotions your phone. Show the coupons at the register to avoid clipping coupons for hours before your trip. The Coupons App is a popular example of this type of application.

Get a shopping app for your particular style of smartphone to save even more. You then accumulate points when you check in at a certain store. With a certain number of points, you can get a prize like a gift card or clothing. You can also scan the barcodes of specific items in stores to gain points. Some of the more popular shopping apps include ShopKick and Checkpoints.

When you are out on the town, use your phone’s GPS system to clue you in on places nearby that offer savings or freebies. You might get a free drink at a restaurant, for example. SocialPass is one of the more popular apps of this type.

Text Savings

If you send a text to a specific number a store or restaurant advertises, you will get discounts and freebie offers on your phone almost instantly. You can also download an app like ShopText to get this service.

Juggling all of the different apps can be a daunting process if you have not used them before. However, picking a few key ones and using them consistently will help you feel more confident and give you the most savings and freebies possible.
